Planning is KEY when it comes to pulling off a successful house move.

I’m sure if you were to ask anyone what their top stressful life events were, moving house would be undoubtedly included.  But it doesn’t have to be this way.

We sat down with our team of professional planners and organisers to create the perfect list of tips for you, now you can avoid unnecessary stress and enjoy the new beginnings in a new home.

  • Book removalists. The good ones are always in demand. Let this be your very first task as soon as you know your moving date.

  • Work out how long it will take you to pack - and double it. At the very least, add on a few more weeks. It always takes longer than you think.

  • Before starting to pack, go through the kitchen and other cupboards, wardrobes, the garage and the shed. Be ruthless. Throw out, sell or give away anything that you haven’t used or think you will use in the near future. There is absolutely no point in packing and moving items, only to unpack them and then dispose of them. Its double handling.

  • Make sure you have sufficient moving boxes. Big boxes of books and crockery can be very heavy, so a variety of sizes is helpful, to keep lifting and moving manageable. Purchase more boxes than you think is necessary - you’ll use them, and it will save you the inconvenience and time of having to buy more.

  • Start packing well and truly before the actual moving date. Packing can be a tedious task requiring patience and persistence. Label the moving boxes eg linen, books, jumpers etc. so that at the other end, you know which box contains what. Try set aside an hour each day to just pack a few boxes, before you know it – it will all be done!

  • Organise to have utilities switched off at the house you are vacating – but don’t forget you will still need electricity to clean after removalists have done their job. You will also need utilities to be switched on at your new house in readiness for your arrival so plan for this too!

  • The actual removal day is big. Energy is the key to keep you going. So have food, snacks and drinks available for the day. Also have a bag with everything you need in the first 24 hours and put this in the car with you so you have easy access to it.

Pro tip – have a bottle of wine ready to go once you arrive at your new home! You deserve/need it.

One last tip – plan, plan and plan. Did we say plan? If it is all too time consuming or overwhelming, get some assistance.
