Tips to beat Procrastination
“Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week.” – Spanish Proverb
How many times have you told yourself that you will do that chore/task tomorrow. Procrastination is easy to do when it is a task that is not something you like to do. It can easily be pushed aside by other, more appealing activities. We all do it. However, most people never quite feel comfortable about it because we know that we should be doing today what we often put off until tomorrow. There are very good reasons why we procrastinate and one of them is, that there is simply not enough time in the day to do all we should.
In addition, one of the biggest problems with procrastination can be that tasks build up. They get put off and off and before you know it, there is a long ‘to do list’. This then becomes even more daunting. Add to that the feeling of things getting out of control and a general sense of not being organised and it is no wonder that some people feel overwhelmed.
Here are some tips to get on top of procrastination:
Tackle some small tasks. Getting a reasonable number of these out of the way, gives a sense that things are getting done.
Work out a plan for the rest of the tasks – by the end of the day, week or whatever.
Talk about some or all the tasks with others. Sometimes this makes the tasks less difficult.
Give yourself an incentive/reward to get a quarter, half or all of the tasks completed.
However, what if you could outsource some of those tasks that you regularly put off, such as filing, party planning, organising tradies, spring cleaning and organising a holiday . How liberating that would be! How in control you would feel, and how much more satisfying your day would become. Not only that, but you would have time to concentrate on the things that you want to do.
In the words of Benjamin Franklin, ‘You may delay, but time will not, and lost time is never found again.
